Let's Breakdown Three Race board Styles

When it comes to race boards, one size doesn’t necessarily fit all. Depending on the conditions you will be paddling in, there are a variety of boards designed to maximize your performance. Let’s dive into the three main types of race boards: Flat Water, All-Around, and Downwind.

Flat Water Race Boards

Ideal for waters like calm lakes and rivers, Flat Water race boards are designed to glide effortlessly across smooth surfaces. These boards typically feature sharp angles, flat side rails, and a pointed nose – all of which help them slice through the water with minimal resistance. With little to no rocker, these boards are built to stay straight and fast. Many flat water boards also come with a dugout design, where the deck is recessed for better secondary stability and higher side rails for improved control. These boards are made for speed on still waters, offering optimal efficiency for race conditions on calm days.

All-Around Race Boards

If you’re looking for versatility, the All-Around race board is it. These boards are built to handle a mix of conditions, from flat water to chop. They feature softer angles, rounder rails, and a softer nose that helps them manage rougher waters more smoothly. Typically, they come with a slight rocker or a high-volume nose that helps shed water when encountering chop or waves. The added stability and smoother ride in mixed conditions make these boards the go-to for many paddlers. With a dugout design and a low, recessed standing area, they offer excellent stability, even on narrower sizes, and allow paddlers to stay in control in all conditions.

Downwind Race Boards

Designed for ocean surf and downwind paddliing, these boards are built to excel in waves and strong currents. Downwind race boards share some features with the All-Around style, such as softer rails for better wave handling. However, they tend to have lower volume, thinner side rails, and a lower rocker at the nose to keep them agile in surf. Their design also helps accelerate quickly and navigate tail turns with ease. Most Downwind boards feature just a slightly lowered standing tray, providing stability, while the low sidewalls make beach starts and re-entries easier. These boards are thinner for faster acceleration and better performance in surf or when navigating around buoy turns. The thin profile also offers enhanced control in side wind and chop, ensuring a balanced, predictable ride.

Choosing the right race board will depend on the conditions you plan to ride. Flat Waterrace boards are perfect for calm, still waters, offering speed and efficiency. All-Around race boards provide stability and versatility, allowing you to paddle in mixed conditions with ease. And lastly, Downwind race boards excel in waves and ocean chop, offering a reactive, fast ride in the surf. You can browse our current selection of race boards
